SUSD WELCOMES NEW SUPERINTENDENT

Tucson, AZ. June 14, 2022 — The Sunnyside Unified School District (SUSD) Governing Board has approved Jose Gastelum as Superintendent for the 2022-23 school year on a 5-0 vote, effective July 1, 2022. He will replace Steve Holmes, who has taken a position with Pima County after serving as superintendent for seven years.

Mr. Gastelum has been with SUSD since 1997 when he began his career in education as a Spanish teacher. He most recently served as Sunnyside's Chief Student Services Officer—a role that has prepared and qualified him to become the district's new Chief Executive. Mr. Gastelum has also worked as Director of Secondary Schools, Principal and Assistant Principal. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education from the University of Arizona, and he holds a Masters in Educational Leadership from Northern Arizona University.

His track record of driving academic excellence and post-secondary attainment, along with his commitment to provide students with the same opportunities he received while growing up in the district, demonstrate his capability to succeed in this new role.

SUSD Board President Consuelo Hernandez states that, “Jose brings extensive experience in teaching, leadership development, and is a well-respected administrator. He has deep roots in the community, he has demonstrated his commitment to student success, and his core values align with our district's mission and vision. Jose is a great fit for this role and we are excited to support and welcome him.”

Jose Gastelum shared that, “As a proud K-12 product of the Sunnyside District, I couldn't be more honored to serve in this capacity. This is a special community that is close to my heart. We have wonderful parents, dedicated teachers and support staff, and amazingly talented students. I look forward to ensuring the continuity of the great work being done in our district as I transition into this new role.”

Mr. Gastelum has been married to his wife, Irene Gastelum, since 1998. They have four children: Briana, Jacob, Jizelle and Jace—their oldest son currently serves in the United States Marine Corps.
