Governing Board

The Sunnyside Unified School District Governing Board is composed of five members elected by the voters in the District. These individuals serve staggered four-year terms. They dedicate numerous hours to the District and serve without pay.

The district was established by the state legislature, by the authority of the Arizona State Constitution, for the purpose of providing an education to all the students of the district. This is the district’s prime function. The Governing Board is selected by the citizens of the community to ensure that this prime function is accomplished in an effective and efficient way. The Board members are responsible for decision-making regarding goals and policies that govern the operation of the school district. As representatives of the people who own and support the schools, the Governing Board accepts the responsibility to identify community needs and opinions and to direct strategies that are responsive within the budgetary limitations of the district.

Board members must have knowledge of the state’s school laws, regulations of the State Department of Education, and district policies and regulations. A person who is a registered voter in Arizona and has been a resident of the Sunnyside District for one year immediately preceding Election Day is eligible for election to the office of Governing board member. No employee of the district or spouse may be a Board member.

The Governing Board will meet on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the: Fred T. Bull Administration Building Governing Board Room 2238 East Ginter Road (unless otherwise noted in the agenda.)

The meetings are open to the public. During each regularly scheduled Governing Board meeting, a “Call to the Audience” is made to give interested individuals in the audience an opportunity to address the Board. Consuelo Hernandez

Consuelo Hernandez is a graduate of the Sunnyside School District. After graduating, she earned her Bachelor's degree in Global Health from Arizona State University. Consuelo is dedicated to helping students achieve and understands the struggles young minority students often face as they navigate through the college system. As a college student, Consuelo had few resources and little guidance, and quickly realized the system of higher education was not intended to support students like herself. Hoping to bridge this gap, Consuelo began mentoring at-risk youth, and has since spent more than ten years fighting for education equity in her community. From hosting free citizenship clinics in the Sunnyside community, to raising money to help students afford their DACA renewals, to providing medical and public health services at free clinics in Panama and Ghana—Consuelo is ready to do the work and brings her passion and experience to the Sunnyside Governing Board.

Matthew Taylor, was born and raised on the south side of Tucson, Arizona. Growing up, Matthew attended Liberty Elementary, Apollo Middle School, and Sunnyside High School. As a junior in high school, he fell into the foster care system, eventually dropping out of high school. After hiding from the foster care system and eventually aging out of the system a few years after, his circumstances inspired him to return his focus to education. In 2018, he earned his GED and began taking college classes. He is currently studying Law at Pima Community College. He’s a dedicated dancer with Ballet Folklorico Tapatio, a dance group in the heart of South Tucson, and has been dancing there for 17 years. Matthew has also served on the board of directors for the local nonprofit Tucson Pride, helping to organize and plan the 2019 Tucson Pride Festival and Parade, along with advocating for critical resources in the local LGBTQ+ community. In 2020, Matthew was elected to the Sunnyside Unified School District Governing Board. Since then, he’s also begun working for Council Member Richard Fimbres in the Ward 5 Council Office, continuing his public service to our south side communities.

Eva Carrillo Dong

In her career, in her personal life and as a member of her community, Eva Carrillo Dong has worked passionately and persistently to empower individuals and families. A lifelong resident of the Southside, she is a leader in the Environmental Justice Action Group’s Community Advisory Board. Having seen close-up the devastating effects of TCE, she wants to ensure that industry is not allowed to destroy families. A member of the Pima County Interfaith Council for eight years, Eva is fighting for funding for Schools Plus Jobs to prevent high school students from dropping out, for Job Path to provide training for older adults, and for Kidco to give families affordable daycare. A single mother of four children, Ms. Dong knows how important it is for families to have jobs that allow them to spend time with their children. She has been a strong advocate of a living wage to allow parents to be at home more with their children, to allow the family unit to be strong. In addition to her work with PCIC, which is non-partisan, she is also a Democratic Party precinct chairperson.

In her career as Title 1 coordinator and lead teacher for the Pima Accommodation District of the Court Alternative Program of Education, Ms. Dong worked with young people 9 to 17 years old detained by the courts. She led the effort and become the only detention center in the nation to achieve NCA accreditation. Ms. Dong works with her students on academics as well as life skills and community involvement so that they will be empowered to treat themselves better and work for things that will touch their children’s lives in the future.

A student in Sunnyside schools from kindergarten through graduation from Sunnyside High, Ms. Dong has remained active in the school district as her four children attended Sunnyside schools. She has been a site council member, a mariachi booster, and a PTO president “for a zillion years,” and is in her third term as a Governing Board member. She also represents her community as a member of the Liberty Partnership that brings together 25 social service agencies monthly to make the most effective use of resources to benefit families. As a community leader, professional educator and political activist, Ms. Dong is a strong voice for children and families.

Eva Carrillo Dong is a member of the National Association for Latino Elected Officials, working to educate people on issues such as the dropout rate and economic disparities for minorities; NALEO focuses on Latinos but is a voice for all minorities. She is also active in the Arizona Correctional Education Association, the National School Board Association’s Federal Relations Network and the NSBA Hispanic Caucus. As an activist for education, environmental safety and economic opportunity, Ms. Dong motivates and empowers others because she knows that they will achieve more than what she can do as one person.

Lisette Nunez

Lisette Nunez was born and raised on the Southside of Tucson and graduated from Sunnyside High School. After graduating from Sunnyside High School, she attended the University of Arizona where she earned her Bachelor’s degree in Family Studies and Human Development with a Minor in Counseling. Shortly after she began working for the desegregation department at TUSD as a Restorative Practices Facilitator, ensuring equitable discipline practices amongst the district. Lisette is trained by the International Institute of Restorative Practices as a trainer of trainers and has served on AVID site committee. Currently, she is obtaining her master's in Legal studies with an emphasis on policy and economic law from the University of Arizona. She is a mother to a 4-year-old son who attends Sunnyside District Schools. Community and family engagement, serving our students and families with resources to be successful contributing members of our community is always a goal for Lisette. Her family’s roots run deep within the district. Growing up, her grandmother worked at Sunnyside High School for over 35 years in the SPED department, both parents are also graduates of Sunnyside High School. Rivera Elementary is proudly named after her late aunt, Rosemarie Rivera who made such a profound impact on so many lives within such a short period of time with us. Lisette hopes to carry on the tradition, and proudly serve her schools and community. Her dedication to serving our students with quality and equitable education is her priority.

Beki Quintero

Ms. Beki Quintero and her husband are lifetime residents of the Sunnyside community. Ms. Quintero graduated from Sunnyside High School with the class of 1971 and husband Richard, in 1970. Ms. Quintero comes from strong family ties to the Sunnyside community as the daughter of Josie and Manny Herrera Jr., also strong advocates and steadfast community leaders. For the past forty years, Ms. Quintero has worked tirelessly to enact programs that engage and educate the youth so they may actively pursue opportunities that will benefit others on a larger, more global scale.

As a strong community advocate, passionate about education and promoting opportunities for the youth in her community, Ms. Quintero also works with local businesses to develop key funding and operational support for our schools. She has worked with programs such as the Community Justice Board’s volunteer graffiti abatement and the All American Awards; a recognition program sponsored by the Sunnyside Neighborhood Association. Ms. Quintero founded the Community Peace Garden in Manuel Herrera Jr. Park. With the Garden, she has dedicated her time and efforts to children of the community during their journey of personal growth, giving them a chance to work the soil and learn life lessons.

Ms. Quintero has dedicated a lifetime to children guiding them to take on responsibilities and challenges they are so capable of. She has also cultivated strong working relationships with elected officials and local media to keep education and youth issues at the forefront of our collective consciousness.

The Sunnyside Unified School District was established through action of the Pima County Board of  Supervisors on June 6, 1921. Classes were held in a one-room adobe building, Sunnyside  Elementary School. The District’s first budget was for $1,500 and the teachers monthly salary was  $135. The average daily membership was 22 students. The population of Tucson at that time was  20,292.
