An Important Message from Superintendent Holmes
June 3, 2022
Dear Sunnyside Family -
It has been my greatest honor to serve as the Superintendent of the Sunnyside Unified School District for the past 7 years, and it is with sadness, but an immense feeling of gratitude, that I bid my farewell to all of you. This summer I will begin a new role as a Deputy County Administrator for Pima County. It has been the honor of a lifetime serving the district and the community that raised me.
I don’t have enough words to express how honored I am to have been part of a learning community that is as committed as you all are to offering students the best educational experiences—it certainly does take a village. Despite the narratives and labels placed upon our community, we have proven that our students can compete with the very best because we have come to expect the very best. If there is any doubt about that, just ask our graduates from the Class of 2022 who will be attending West Point, Ivy League schools, the University of Arizona and other top notch universities, and competing in some of the best athletic programs in the country. This is the new expectation we have set for Sunnyside graduates and I can proudly say we did this together as one; una familia.
Together we reached a record amount of scholarships awarded to the graduating class of 2022, totaling over $23 million!
Together we have created a unified vision so that we work everyday to ensure that our students are college, career and community ready.
Together we have built world-class, nationally recognized Career and Technical Education programs at our comprehensive high schools that create successful career and postsecondary education opportunities for our graduates.
Together we have increased postsecondary attainment and built strategic partnerships with the University of Arizona and Pima Community College to support our students as they navigate their post secondary futures.
My last day will be July 15th and I will work with our Governing Board to ensure a smooth transition to new leadership, so the work we have started Together will continue seamlessly.
I can proudly say that after 28 wonderful years of service in public education, my success can be attributed to the incredible educators, community members, families, students and support staff I have worked alongside of.
Steve Holmes, Superintendent
