District Override

In November 2023, after a 16-year hiatus, the Sunnyside Unified School District proudly witnessed two successful overrides after voters approved Propositions 498 and 499. In November of 2025, voters also passed Proposition 416, a bond measure to provide for increased safety, security, modernization and new construction projects within the District.

We extend our deepest gratitude to all the voters within the Sunnyside District — together, we can continue to strengthen our communities by strengthening our schools! Below is a summary of what voters approved and how dollars can be spent according to state law.

• Proposition 498 – Maintenance & Operation (M&O) Budget Override
  Funds from Maintenance & Override are used for running the schools and funding employee salaries and benefits, purchasing classroom supplies and providing transportation.
   
• Proposition 499 – District Additional Assistance (DAA) Budget Override
  Unrestricted Capital Override funds are used to build and equip schools, repair and upgrade existing buildings, purchase school buses and purchase technology.
   
• Proposition 416  $120 Million School Improvement Bond
  The Governing Board called a special bond election to provide for increased safety, security, modernization and new construction projects within the District. Existing District facilities are aging and require significant improvements and systems replacement, the cost of which well exceeds the funding provided by the State. The only realistic mechanism to obtain enough funding to make the necessary repairs, complete planned renovations, is through the bond election process. Bonds will cover expenses for:
  • Construction, renovation and modernization of all 21 school sites and grounds including Sunnyside High School building replacements
  • Critical safety and security improvements
  • Athletic and Fine Arts facility upgrades
  • Replacement and upgrades of structural, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, roofing systems
  • Classroom technology, furniture and equipment
  • Student transportation vehicles
